Public health engages multiple disciplines to promote and enhance health across populations. While this may common occur at local, regional and national levels, why should we as US residents, have a vested interest in the health of populations abroad? The answer goes beyond humanitarian imperatives.
We will examine global health through 3 case studies which highlight the basic human needs of clean air, water, and adequate nutrition. We will see what diseases and conditions arise, how they are distributed and how public health efforts succeeded, and in some cases tragically failed. We will also consider how dynamic factors such as global warming and urbanization further impact on population health.
Objectives:
By the end of this seminar participants should grasp:
1. How US residents are contributors and stakeholders in health outcomes across the globe
2. The challenges of securing critical substrates and how this affects health
3. How migration impacts health with emphasis on slum dwellers
4. Gender disparities
5. Basic effects of global warming on health and disease
6. Their potential role in solving these challenges
