The Science Behind Infectious Diseases

Please click here to view the class list >>

This is a scientific foray into infectious diseases that you may encounter during your career. On the first day Monday June 18, a research paper will be presented in journal club format to illustrate how you can read basic science papers, which will help you to incorporate emerging science findings into clinical decision making. This also serves to aid you in your presentation styles. Please use this template for your journal club. On June 20th  Dr. Ernst will watch the student presentation of his chosen journal and guide with ideas and questions to further prepare you for understanding what you can gain from scientific literature.

The other speakers have assigned a paper for all of you to read the day before you meet them. A group of five-six students will present some background and the figures in this paper to the class. As in journal club format all students should read the paper. We hope that this will serve to familiarize you with the pathogen and facilitate discussion.

Finally we ask you to formulate a Project Summary for a KO8 (200 words max). These are competitive award mechanisms to support the development of outstanding clinician research scientists. This may be a career option that you should consider. Your aim is to integrate science concepts that you have learned and clinical medicine that you have recently experienced. You can propose a project about any of the pathogens that we have covered or you can write about any pathogen of your choice.
