Finding and interpreting the evidence for clinical decisions is one of the most important skills that physicians need to develop. Most residency programs expect their residents to efficiently and accurately find the answers to clinical questions generated by the patients they are responsible for. This course will help students develop skills in answering clinical questions of all kinds by using medical literature.
By the end of this 9-day course, students will be able to:
- Formulate clinical questions in a way that facilitates finding answers.
- Utilize advanced techniques to search medical literature.
- Interpret the validity and results of studies looking at:
- Therapeutic interventions
- Diagnostic testing
- Harm from medications, procedures and environmental toxins
- Prognosis of diseases
- Systematic reviews (metanalyses) of the items listed above
- Understand how to apply evidence from the literature to clinical practice and, in particular, how to individualize the application to each unique patient.
- Browse medical journals with the goal of efficiently finding valid articles and interpreting results.
