The neck can be thought of as 2 columns within one cylinder:
            Lateral to these columns are:
carotid artery, internal jugular vein, and vagus nerve, all in the carotid sheath
            Anterior Column = Visceral Column
                        Contains viscera: Trachea, Larynx,
                                                   Esophagus, Pharynx,
                                                   Thyroid, Parathyroid
                        Covered by pre-tracheal layer of deep cervical fascia
            Posterior Column = Vertebral Column
                        Contains vertebrae, nerves, and associated musculature: 7 cervical vertebrae
                                                                                                            8 cervical spinal nerves
                                                                                                            Scalene muscles
                                                                                                            Phrenic nerve
                                                                                                            Sympathetic Trunk
                        Covered by pre-vertebral layer of deep cervical fascia
           
Each of these columns is contained within a single cylinder that consists of three layers:
            (1) Outer investing layer of deep cervical fascia, (2) Superficial fascia,  (3) Skin
