TOPIC AND TEXT REFERENCE: POSTERIOR ABDOMINAL VISCERA PP. 89-92

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Understand the impressions made on the kidneys by the other visceral organs.

Observe the relationships that the ureters have with the testicular(ovarian) vessels as well as the posterior abdominal muscles.

Identify the fascial layers that surround the kidneys.

Identify the different structural parts of the kidney (i.e. minor/major calyces, renal cortex, renal medulla, renal pelvis).

Trace the 3 different blood supplies to the suprarenal glands and observe that the two glands are different shapes.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR LAB TODAY:

Pg. 90: If your digestive tract is still present simply flop it over to one side or the other to examine the posterior abdominal wall. Use care not to damage the ureters and the testicular/ovarian vessels when removing the parietal peritoneum.

When shelling out the kidneys, make sure the suprarenal glands are not damaged and leave the blood supply to the suprarenal glands intact.

CLINICAL EXERCISES:

1. Why are the two kidneys at different levels in the abdominal cavity?

2. At what points along the length of the ureter could a kidney stone become stuck?

3. How can the presence of accessory renal arteries be explained?

KEY STRUCTURES:
You should be able to identify in a cadaver all the structures listed under key words unless they have an asterisk.
