SLIDE #1
Nerves of the Posterior Abdomen Wall
- Both somatic and autonomic
- Somatic – found external to the inner investing layer of deep fascia
- Nerves of the posterior abdominal wall arise from the ventral primary rami of spinal nerves T12 to L4.
- Lumbar plexus = L1-L4
- Formed within the psoas major and its branches can be seen as they emerge from the lateral border of this muscle
- Can only be seen after removal of the psoas major muscle
- The nerves of the lumbar plexus are variable in their branching
Use the peripheral relationship of the nerves for positive identification
