For anatomical and clinical references, the anterior abdominal wall can be subdivided into quadrants by a horizontal and vertical line through the umbilicus: right upper quadrant, right lower quadrant, left upper quadrant, left lower quadrant. The location of the organs or pathological changes within the abdominal cavity can be described using these divisions.
