Membranous labyrinth inside osseus labyrinth, 8x
- This close-up of the inner ear shows the two labyrinths. The
way it is portrayed in the picture, the osseus labyrinth may look like
a separate bone, but it is merely a series of tunnels inside the temporal
bone. The membranous labyrinth is like a balloon within the tunnels.
- The cochlea contains the hearing organ, the Organ of Corti.
The ampulla of the semicircular canals have crista ampullaris, while
the saccule and utricle have maculae. Both these organs are involved
in the sense of balance/position.
