Lipoxins
Lipoxin Action
The lipoxins function by:
- blocking the cysLT1 leukotriene receptor.
- activating the lipoxin receptor ALXR. ALXR also responds to a peptide hormone,
annexin-1, that is released from cells in response to glucocorticoids (descibed later).
Lipoxins act to:
- Inhibit activation of inflammatory cells (e.g. polymorphoneutrophils and eosinophils).
- Stimulate macrophages to increase phagocytosis of immune cells that are dying by apoptosis.
- Stimulate proliferation of cells that are involved in wound healing such as fibroblasts, endothelial cells, gastrointestinal epithelial cells and renal mesangial cells.
