• activating the lipoxin receptor ALXR. ALXR also responds to a peptide hormone, annexin-1, that is released from cells in response to glucocorticoids (descibed later).

Lipoxins act to:

• Inhibit activation of inflammatory cells (e.g. polymorphoneutrophils and eosinophils).
• Stimulate macrophages to increase phagocytosis of immune cells that are dying by apoptosis.
• Stimulate proliferation of cells that are involved in wound healing such as fibroblasts, endothelial cells, gastrointestinal epithelial cells and renal mesangial cells.
